Media Room Gone Mad!

Our home is experiencing chaos at its best with the addition of a media room on one side, and water damage repair from December’s sunny Southern California rain storms on the other.  We naively thought it would be an easy thing to add a simple room to the existing footprint of our house, but $16,000 worth of roof, wall, and flooring repair came from out of nowhere and, somehow, not a single room in the house will be left unscathed!

The last time we underwent such ambitious renovation, we were quite a different family. Reviewing pictures recently of that time period, rather skinnier versions of my husband and I were tending to a toe-headed seven-year-old boy with eyelashes out to here and Thomas the Tank Engine in a travel size carrying case we never left home without. Our now sixteen year old cross country running high school sophomore has traded Thomas in for a cell phone and iPod, and his dad and I grow shorter at about the same rate his shoe size expands! Times have changed!

As our families grow and interests develop and change, our demands on our homes change with them. Sometimes it is as simple as packing up Thomas’ train track and replacing it with a pool table. And sometimes it requires a whole new change of location. But wherever and however those changes take place, no one can get a better read on the personalities of our families than when they are in our home.

Home is the theater stage where our life stories unfold before us. It is where we nurture our romances, our children, our pets, our family and friends, and our souls. A well decorated home enhances the value of those activities, surrounding our memories like a beautiful picture frame.

The next time we renovate, it will be amazing to look at photos of where and who we were today, and the walls as they stood, damaged or not, in this “media room” chapter of our scrapbook of home.
